We would like to introduce Professor Francesco Torella who has joined the LABB team and is now actively involved in our research efforts.

Francesco was appointed Consultant vascular/endovascular surgeon in 2003. He works at the Liverpool University Hospitals and at the Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. He studied in Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom and qualified in Medicine in 1992. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of surgeons of England in 1997 and subsequently trained in general/vascular surgery in Merseyside and Manchester. He was awarded his Doctor of Medicine postgraduate degree in Manchester with the thesis “Development and Evaluation of a Blood Transfusion Trigger by Near Infrared Spectroscopy”. He is a founding member of the Liverpool Cardiovascular Service, in which cardiac and vascular surgeons combine their skills to deliver treatment to patients with complex aortic disease. He has a research interest in aortic disease, as it can be seen from his numerous publications (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=torella%20f&sort=date&page=2; https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/mathematical-sciences/staff/francesco-torella/publications/). He is an advisor to the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on aortic endoprostheses. He has been an invited speaker at national and international meetings and learned societies on topics related to aortic disease, most recently the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland, Royal College of Anaesthetists, Multidisciplinary European Endovascular Meeting, Perspectives in Vascular Surgery, Critical Issues in Aortic Endografting.



Congratulations to Phakakorn Panpho who passed her PhD viva today. Her PhD title was “Biomechanics and biochemistry of the aorta in chronic aortic dissection” and her examiners were Prof. Aung Oo (External examiner, Cardiovascular Surgery Clinical Lead for Aortovascular Surgery at The Barts Heart Centre) and Dr Jude Curran (Internal Examiner).

The LABB Group would like to thank Dr Hannah Davies for all her contributions to the LABB Group. Hannah was involved in our research since the inception of the LABB Group. Hannah has taken on a new role at University of Liverpool as the Human Material and Quality Assurance Officer. We wish her well in her new role.

The LABB Group is part of one of the academic research groups embedded in The Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences.

The Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science (LCCS) has been formed as a strategic research platform, bringing together world-leading research and clinical specialists in cardiovascular biology and medicine. University of Liverpool, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Trust, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Health Partners have allied their forces to tackle the stark issue of Cardiovascular health in the North West.

We presented a poster (Phakakorn Panpho) and an oral presentation on our work at BiomedEng19 held at Imperial College which took place 5th-6th Sept 2019. Congratulations to Phakakorn Panpho who was awarded a BHF Travel Award.

The LABB group presented their work at the Liverpool Aortic Surgery Symposium VIII on 28th June 2019, which was attended by leading cardiothoracic surgeons from the UK and USA. Dr Jill Madine delivered a talk entitled 'Idiopathic degenerative thoracic aneurysms are associated with increased aortic medial amyloid'. Dr Riaz Akhtar gave a talk entitled 'Is bicuspid aortopathy associated with distinct patterns of matrix degradation?' Congratulations to Riaz who was awarded the Best abstract presentation for scientific research in Thoracic Aortic surgery.
